WOODBURY — Almost four years after it closed, the movie rental store Video World has been eternally memorialized in a tribute documentary simply titled “Video World,” a film that documents Video World’s life and final days.

The 17-minute film, directed by former Video World employee Ben Churchill, was released through Vimeo on Friday, December 6.

Mr. Churchill is a former Woodbury resident who decided to make the film to pay tribute to both the store that fostered his love of movies and the businessman whom he sees as a mentor.

“Video stores have been going out of business, just like this one did, in my hometown,” Mr. Churchill narrates as the movie begins, warning of the documentary’s end within the first 20 seconds.

The film follows former storeowner Edward Kaczynski as he works through the store’s final weeks…

Documentary and web series filmmaker Ben Churchill shot 57 hours of footage over the store’s last week in March 2010. Now friends, family and folks with a penchant for fading cultural touchstones can watch a 16-minute film celebrating Video World…

Video World posterBen Churchill’s documentary “Video World” was released Friday, a film that chronicles the “life and death of video stores” starting with one local favorite. For locals, Video World was a landmark. It wasn’t just the place you went to rent videos, it was the place where you met up with friends before grabbing a pizza, asked for recommendations from the friendly employees, chatted with fellow movie lovers, and maybe tried to weasel out of a late charge or two.

Churchill grew up in Woodbury and worked at Video World in the late 90’s because of his interest in film. He went on to work in radio, television, and film, and moved to the West Coast. But when he heard Video World was closing in 2010, he asked the owner, Ed Kaczynski, to film a documentary during the final days of the store’s 23 years in business…
